Workshop on “Equine Welfare: Current Status, Challenges, and Way Forward”
A workshop on “Equine Welfare: Current Status, Challenges, and Way Forward” was conducted by the Animal Health Training and Consultancy Service – AHTCS on 3rd January 2025 at the Livestock Service Office, Lagankhel, Lalitpur. The workshop primarily focused on the challenges faced by equine farmers and field veterinarians working with equines in the brick industry, as well as strategies to improve the overall welfare of equines. A total of 24 participants from various government institutions attended the workshop.
The workshop highlighted the state of animal welfare in Nepal through an insightful presentation by Dr. Abhash Poudel from the Department of Livestock Services, Government of Nepal (DLS). Dr. Umesh Dahal, Director General of DLS, shared promising future plans to uplift animal welfare. Similarly, the challenges encountered during fieldwork with equines were addressed by Dr. Umesh Sharma, Executive Director of AHTCS. The collaborative group work among the participants resulted in outstanding plans and strategies to overcome these challenges. Overall, the workshop was highly productive and paved the way for future advocacy in equine welfare.
